Exciting news!

Bravo! Tutoring will be offering a month-long Transition Math summer camp for students starting Grade 9 this upcoming fall. Led by our amazing instructor Mario, the camp, hosted virtually, will consist of 2 sessions per week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) from 5:30 – 7:30 PM. The first session will take place July 7th and the final session will be July 30th.

Camp Curriculum (What will be Covered)

The camp will start with a review of the fundamentals from Grade 8, so that even though your child hasn’t been in school this past spring, he/she can feel confident to start the year. Then, we’ll transition into highlights of the Grade 9 curriculum, to help your child feel well-prepared for the upcoming school semester, which is especially important given these uncertain circumstances. We’ll finish off camp with some transition tips and tools to guide students through the transition from elementary to high school, going over skills such as proper time management and prioritization.

Camp Cost

The cost for the full Transition Math camp is 0 (8 total 2-hour sessions). As space is limited, please sign up as soon as possible to reserve a spot for your child.

To reserve a spot, or if you have any additional questions, please fill out the contact form below:

How to Explain Prejudice to a child: A Parent’s guide

<img class="alignnone wp-image-1245 size-large" src="https://bravotutoring.ca/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Explaining-1024x684.jpeg" alt="How to explain prejudice to a child | Racism definition for kids | Learn with Bravo!
Recent events in Minneapolis have triggered an explosion of protest across the world at the persistent and pervasive problems of racism and other prejudice that permeate across our societies. Parents of young children are caught between two intimidating challenges, the first being to shield their families from the worst excesses of violence and turmoil. The other is perhaps even more daunting to some, and that is explaining it all to their kids. But how to explain prejudice to a child?

Children are naturally curious, and are bound to want to know why there is so much raucous, why people on the TV or even on their street appear angry, carrying signs or throwing things. In the eyes of a child it can all be quite baffling. For parents, approaching the subject is important, yet fraught with concern, so we have prepared some advice for how to deal with it.

1. Don’t expect to get it done in one short conversation

Explaining racism and prejudice to young people is a process. You can’t possible cover everything in a single conversation, so the first step is understanding and acknowledging that you can’t achieve what you want in that way.

2. Prepare your own thoughts before you start

A very important thing is that you are clear and unambiguous when speaking to your children. Ambiguities and baffling explanations will just leave them more confused. This means you need to take time to think and prepare what you might say to explain the key ideas. For example, have you ever tried to define “racism” out loud? You may be able to visualize it in your mind, but explaining it aloud is another thing altogether.

Find resources to help you understand the definitions clearly (there are many available online!) You should wait to speak with your kids until you feel confident about the topic yourself.

3. Start with the basics, and then let the kids lead with their questions

Kids are both tougher and smarter than you think. Those topics you think they can’t handle, they likely can, and with gusto. Their minds are truly wondrous; able to listen, absorb, understand and clarify in ways that adults cannot. You can start the conversation by addressing the terms you’ve now clarified in the context of what kids have seen going on around them.

After that, give your children space to reflect and ask questions about what they’ve heard. The point of the exercise is to get them thinking, not to hammer things into their heads to memorize or repeat like parrots later on.

4. Reassure kids that prejudice doesn’t make them inherently bad

One reaction that some kids may have is that they have expressed or shown prejudice themselves, which might scare them. You can reassure them by pointing out that our struggle as a community is not in stamping out all prejudice, but rather recognizing it when it happens and trying to overcome it together. Use examples from your own life when you’ve subconsciously or otherwise shown prejudice, and how you reflected upon it and improved. Kids often idolize grown-ups, so helping them understand that even grown-ups are working on this will encourage them.

Gentle but Direct – This is the Best Way

Honesty and awareness are the two core principles at the heart of this lesson. We don’t want to alarm kids, or make them think they’ve done something wrong. The goal should be to help them understand what’s going on in the world around them, and not to be afraid to ask questions about it. In this way, over time, we help raise our children to be sensitive and caring members of the community.

Why is growth mindset important?

To understand what growth mindset entails, it’s good to have a solid understanding of what a mindset is. A mindset is a set of attitudes and beliefs about certain traits. It can either be a fixed mindset or a growth mindset.

Fixed Mindset: Children with fixed mindsets believe that qualities such as intelligence are inborn and cannot be changed.

Growth Mindset: Children with growth mindsets have the attitude that nothing is inborn; anything can be learned.

With a growth mindset, children believe that brains and talents can only take them so far—dedication, resilience, and hard work is what can get them to the top. This drives them into being more daring at opportunities and develops their courage to confront whatever challenges they come across.

The best part is that it is developed from an early age. Complimenting your child for their little achievements goes a long way in improving their self-esteem and developing their growth mindset.

So, how would a growth mindset benefit your child?

1. It motivates them to keep learning – creates a lifelong learner

Your child develops a strong zeal and desire to explore their full potential regardless of the failures along the way. They believe it’s not only the perfect who succeed. Rather, it’s those with goals and the ambitions to get there. Imagine if your child perceives failures as learning opportunities meant to drive them to success. They will keep pushing regardless of how long it takes, hence getting better by the day.

2. Growth mindset Develops their self-esteem

Growing up with a growth mindset phases out their fears and helps them believe in their abilities. For instance, when asked to take up leadership opportunities, they are confident enough to grab them because they have learned to believe in the capacity. A growth mindset, however, doesn’t make them overestimate their abilities and potential. They develop more humility as they triumph.

3. Develops their problem-solving skills

Throughout different experiences, your child encounters along the way, and your child learns to perceive failure as learning opportunities. Out of this resilience, the child gathers a wealth of experience and diverse ideas to handle challenging times because they are bound to catch up with them at some point in life.

4. They try out different things as they grow

A growth mindset is associated with courage. As your kid grows, they have the courage to engage in multiple things because of their daring nature. Through this, they learn and acquire different skills, which makes them all-round players. These are great abilities that help them even during the transition to the job market.

5. Growth Mindset helps Create an Independent learner

This personality develops your child’s discipline of working without supervision because they have established some inner drive to do the right things. Again, this is a vital skill in being responsible not only in their future places of work but also in managing their families effectively.

6. They embrace constructive criticism

Instead of getting mad when corrected, they embrace the advice and work toward making the best out of it, instead of fighting back.

7. They Embrace the concept of brain plasticity

Just as the brain isn’t fixed, they believe the mind can also be expanded by learning, hence not limited.

8. They are more focused on the goal

Regardless of what happens during the process, they remain hoping for greater results at the end of the tunnel. They consider it better to take small steps every day rather than rushing while making mistakes, or even giving up when the going gets too tough.

9. They appreciate teamwork

Like anyone else who believes in growth, they are also willing to pull others up to achieve success together. In other words, they aren’t selfish with success.

In summary, this is just but a portion of the huge pool of benefits your child will enjoy by developing a growth mindset. In the end, your child will be reliable, competent, and responsible across all the areas of concern. As a parent, you play a significant role in helping them develop a growth mindset. At Bravo! Tutoring, we can also help your child develop it.
